How to Save Money on Heating Bills

Stacks of coinsLowering your heating bills is always a major concern in the winter and for those on a tight budget, it’s absolutely crucial. Winters® Home Services is always offering coupons and specials so our clients don’t need to panic when it comes to money.

Maintain Your Furnace

We strongly encourage all homeowners to undergo routine furnace maintenance. Think of a car – if you don’t continue with regular oil changes than your vehicle has to work harder. This is true for furnaces as well. When debris isn’t thoroughly removed from the furnace, airflow gets blocked and the motor has to work a lot harder to get through the filters. The motor can actually overheat which leads to failure.

If you have a boiler, it could lose its efficiency as it ages. Again, regular maintenance is important so you don’t end up spending a significant amount of money down the road on utility bills.

Adjust Your Thermostat

New thermostats offer Wi-Fi, remote capabilities which allow homeowners to control the temperature in the home from just about anywhere.

Auto: If you keep the thermostat’s fan to auto, the fan will only run when the furnace does. If you keep the fan set to “on,” then it will run constantly.

Drop the temperature when sleeping: Homeowners can actually save 10% per year in both heating and cooling costs. You should do this while you’re sleeping and we recommend setting the thermostat to 68 degrees in the winter and 78 degrees in the Summer.
