They were presented to First Lady Pat Nixon and were a symbolic gesture of diplomacy between China and the United States. The panda pair were celebrities. While it brought millions of visitors to the National Zoo, it also allowed for a study of pandas as an attempt repopulation and conservation of the species. Sadly none of Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing cubs survived. The
