Using the plastic handle, press firmly against the bark until you reach the wood, then use the swedish steel gauge to measure the Bark's thickness. Spring in handle pushes scale back over bit as its pulled from tree to protect bit and to safely carry. Gauge is aluminum with steel recessed tip. ABS plastic handle.
