Ask an Expert: December 2011 Q&A

Question:

My house is 100% electric heat (2 heat pumps) but I am interested in trying to find a way to improve the heating of 2 specific rooms with radiant floor heating - my family room which is at the far end of the home from the heating system and located directly above an unheated 2 car garage; and the master bath which has tile floors. Is it possible to install radiant floors in an electric heated home? Is it cost effective from an energy usage perspective?

Answer:

From an energy perspective, electric radiant is not effective. Electric radiant will never overcome the cold of the garage. However, if you decided to use radiant with hot water you will probably make it. Our pros and cons are below.

Pros:
Warm floors and furniture
Heated garage
Family room and tile floors warm and toasty

Cons:
All flooring will be removed unless another idea is found and we can install "staple up" radiant floor
You can never have rugs on radiant floor
You will have to have another heating system. Gas or oil fired with forced hot water. It's an expense.
